Aoba Japanese School 23

Ahead of Aoba Japanese School’s international launch, the identity needed an update. The goal was to keep recognisable Japanese cues while adapting the system for a global audience. The work focused on digital touchpoints, as the school planned to expand beyond Japan primarily online.

The new style builds on elements often associated with Japanese design: bold geometric forms, high-contrast colour, and mascots. A vivid green became a key colour — students already know it from the school uniform, where it functions as a road-safety element. In the updated identity, it takes a central role.

A separate task was the school mascot. Instead of a single fixed character, we proposed a modular “builder” where students can create their own unique hero. This approach invites participation and makes the identity feel more personal.
